5 Tips for digital nomads
Look for lodging with wifi. Whether you’re headed to an urban loft in the heart of the city, a beachside condo, or a last-minute rental cabin tucked in the woods, make sure your lodging of choice offers internet. Those off the beaten path (like yurts or glamping tents) might not feature this must-have amenity.
Up your phone data. In a pinch, many digital nomads rely on phone data for working from the road. If you frequently end up away from traditional internet, consider getting unlimited cell data so you can work from your phone hotspot.
Invest in noise-canceling headphones. Some people can work from anywhere, no matter the surroundings and noise levels. And then, there’s the rest of us. Noise-canceling headphones block out ambient noise, helping you concentrate on the task at hand. Paying for an ad-free music streaming service can also be helpful if you can work while tuning in to music with these headphones.
Build your network. It can get lonely working remotely. If you have coworkers, be sure to stay in touch regularly. Freelancers and contract workers can build their networks and find community in online or in-person groups that focus on their line of work like writing, photography, or UX design. Try out a co-working space or attend networking events to meet new people and potential clients.
Pick the right banks. ATM fees can quickly add up if you use a bank that doesn’t reimburse for using outside ATMs. Choose a financial institution that will pay you back for withdrawals from these machines. If you travel internationally, look for a bank and credit card company that doesn’t charge extra for foreign transactions.
